Anthrax killer: no 'conservative bent'

From September 15, 2003, in
"Isn't it interesting that the letters were sent to news organizations and Democratic politicians.  Has anyone investigated Mr. Hatfill's political leanings, or anyone elses, that would lead a would be attacker to target such individuals?"
Marilyn Thompson:  "Yes, ...the FBI has said from the start that it believes this person is of a conservative bent, which might explain the intended targets to some degree."

Really?  The FBI thought the anthrax killer was "of a conservative bent" when they targeted military scientist Steven Hatfill in the notorious 2001 anthrax attacks.  Recently, the government reached a settlement with Hatfill worth $5.8 million for floating his name as a "person of interest".

Now 'Bruce Ivins, a top government scientist who helped the FBI analyze samples from the attacks, committed suicide just as the Justice Department was prepared to file criminal charges against him, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.   Authorities were planning an indictment and were considering whether to seek the death penalty.'

So what about Ivins?  Was he of a conservative bent?  Sending anthrax to two Democrat Senators (and maybe even Tom Brokaw) had the FBI concluding so.  Certainly it threw them off the scent for seven years, but do we know enough about him to make a judgment?

While 'He denounced taxpayer funding for assisted suicide,' it's odd he evidently had no qualms (as it turned out) with suicide itself, which his Catholic Church considers a mortal sin.  This isn't 'a conservative bent'.

In a letter to the editor, Ivins 'pointed readers to a study that suggested a genetic component for homosexuality'.  If indeed there is ever a genetic component found for homosexuality, it will take the wind out of the sails of those conservatives who believe it to be a lifestyle choice, not to mention putting into question  Paul to the Romans 1:24-32 "God's decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them but approve those who would practice them."  Choice is one thing, God's gene is another.

After Ivins discussed plans to kill his co-workers, social worker Jean Duley who led the sessions, said Ivins's psychiatrist had "called him homicidal, a sociopath with clear intentions."  "He is a revenge killer," Duley explained to a Maryland District Court in Frederick in July as she sought a restraining order against Ivins. "When he feels that he has been slighted, and especially towards women, he plots and actually tries to carry out revenge killing."  Note 'especially towards women'.  Is there a link between his feelings toward women and his defense of homosexuality through the    'genetic component'?

"He was much more emotionally labile (liable to change), in terms of sensitivity to things, than most scientists. . . ." said a longtime colleague.  Emotional and sensitive, not your regular adjectives of a conservative (especially as described on the Daily Kos).

Ivins 'had stopped listening to local radio station WFMD because he was offended by the language and racially charged commentary of its hosts' (Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, and Glenn Beck).  This is completely at odds with the 'conservative bent' theory.

'He also commented on the growing political influence of conservative Christians, and he was willing to criticize his church'.  "The Roman Catholic Church should learn from other equally worthy Christian denominations (Equally worthy?  This sounds more like a Kumbaya Church member rather than a conservative Catholic) and eagerly welcome female clergy as well as married clergy" (Bingo!, game over, man of interest is full blown United Church of Christ, Novus Ordo, Vatican II liberal Catholic).

'FREDERICK, Md. - Bruce E. Ivins was a juggler, a gardener, a church musician, a Red Cross volunteer — and a suspected multiple murderer, according to federal authorities.'  But you won't read that he was of a progressive, liberal bent.
